Montblanc Max von Oppenheim Sterling Silver and Gold-Plated Limited-Edition Fountain Pen

Model: Patron of the Arts Edition
Number: 3242/4810
Cap and Barrel: Sterling silver and gold plate
Nib/Tip: 18 karat white gold medium nib

Max von Oppenheim (1860-1946) was a renowned German lawyer, diplomat, ancient historian, and archaeologist. He is best known for his extensive studies of Middle Eastern culture and the discovery of the Tell Halaf site in 1899. Oppenheim conducted major excavations there in 1911 and 1929, uncovering significant artifacts and ruins, which he later exhibited in Berlin. His contributions to archaeology earned him the title "the last of the great amateur archaeological explorers of the Near East."

Tell Halaf dates back to the 6th millennium BC, and Oppenheim's excavations revealed the ruins of the Aramaean town of Guzana, which thrived around the turn of the 2nd and 1st millennium BC. The town, destroyed and plundered by the Assyrian queen Semiramis in 808 BC, became an Assyrian province.

This exquisite fountain pen, dedicated to Max von Oppenheim, features a cap and barrel made of 925 sterling silver with translucent grey lacquer inlays, creating a stunning three-dimensional effect. Gold-plated rings on the cap and barrel bear a geometric pattern inspired by the facade of the temple palace and prehistoric ceramics from Tell Halaf. The pen's rhodium-plated 18k gold nib is engraved with intricate details, symbolizing the pinnacle of craftsmanship.
